The world's best chainsaw carvers are ready for action!
STIHL proudly presents the 2017 Australian Chainsaw Carving Championship.
Once again, STIHL is proud to present the 2017 Australian Chainsaw Carving Championship. Now in it's fourth year, STIHL have teamed up with one of Victoria's biggest tourist destinations, SkyHigh Mount Dandenong, to host the annual Australian Chainsaw Carving Championships from 17 to 21 January 2017. The event showcases some of the greatest carvers from all around the world including Canada, USA, Czech Republic and Japan, as well as the best talent from Australia.
Visitors to Federation Square in Melbourne on Friday 13th January 2017 will also be treated to a sneak preview of what's in store at the championship, when 2015 Australian Champion Robby Bast (VIC) will be showcasing his talent on the amphitheatre steps, but the workers of Melbourne shouldn't be disturbed too much by the humming of chainsaw engines as Robby will be using the latest and greatest battery chainsaws from STIHL, including the MSA 120 and MSA 200.
Robby will be joined by some familiar faces from across Australia, the young talented Brandon Kroon (VIC), last year's 3rd place getter Matt Bird (QLD), crowd favourite Angie Polglaze (VIC) as well as first time entrant Roger Hannemann (QLD). The International contingent includes 2014 and 2016 champion Hikaru Kodama (JPN), 2016 runner-up Jeff Samudosky (USA) and another crowd favourite in Steve Kenzoa (CAN). Martin Komarek (CZH) and Molly Wiste (USA) make their debut appearances in the Australian Chainsaw Carving Championship this year to round out the field.
Over the past three years the event has attracted crowds from across the country that are treated to an astonishing spectacle of artistry as the carvers wield their chainsaws to turn plain logs into amazing works of art. They are artists – just with a different canvas. This year the organisers have decided to theme the championship, and with the Australia Day Weekend right around the corner, what better theme is there than… Australiana?! Visitors can expect giant Kangaroos, cute Koalas and maybe even a Ned Kelly or a Crocodile Dundee! Carvers will draw lots for their huge cypress pine logs (approx. 2 meters in height and 1 meter in width), which have been sustainably sourced from the Yarra Valley after the wild storms earlier this year. From there they have 5 days to express themselves and impress the judges to win the title of 2017 Australian Chainsaw Carving Champion.
Each carver will also be allotted a 1 hour speed carve with the pieces sold after in the onsite shop. Also on sale will be a number of smaller pieces pre-carved by each of the competitors, with prices starting as low as $50. Visitors will have the chance to take home some one of a kind masterpieces from some of the best artists in the world.
Have you ever wondered how an international chainsaw carver gets their chainsaws to an event? Well thankfully they don't have to… STIHL's partnership with the event allows the international carvers to travel lightly and not raise any concerns with customs officials! All the carvers are provided with STIHL Chainsaws to use during the competition which this year will include the new MSA 120 battery chainsaw. The lightweight, easy to use and extremely manoeuvrable MSA 120 is quickly becoming a favourite in the carving community. Not only does this saw allow precision detail, it also offers the carvers incredible comfort; very little noise, very low vibration and better yet, it produces zero emissions when in use.
SkyHigh Mount Dandenong is an ideal location for this spectacular event, set in the summer shade of the beautiful Dandenong's forest, with a panoramic view of the city. There is no better place to see the world's best carvers at work.
The carvers will compete for cash prizes and the carvings will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the event on Saturday 21 January 2017.
