FOR EFFECTIVE MULCHING AND COMPOSTING

With a STIHL garden shredder and mulcher, you can rapidly convert hard and soft cuttings from trees, shrubs and other plants into valuable mulch or composting material.

STIHL SHREDDERS: MAKE WORKING WITH CUTTINGS EASIER

When you’re pruning shrubs, perennials and other plants, you create a whole load of garden waste such as branches, twigs or grass clippings. This cut material takes up a lot of space in your garden if it is not crushed, and is also often difficult to compost in this form. Shredding is a good answer.

There are many advantages to shredding material:

  • Putting cuttings through a shredder reduces the volume by up to 75%, making disposal or further processing easier.

  • You can use the shredded matter as a mulch layer to cover soil, or turn it into compost for use as fertiliser or humus.

  • Once composted, shredded green waste contains valuable nutrients so you don’t need to buy additional fertilisers.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT GARDEN SHREDDER

A few simple questions will help you determine which shredder is right for your needs.

  1. What do you want to shred? Branches and woody hedge trimmings? Or mixed shredding material containing leaves, green cuttings, and thin twigs? It’s worth investing in a powerful petrol shredder if you have large quantities of garden waste. In our range, you can find compact emissions-free electric shredders for smaller quantities of hard shredded material, as well as higher power models for larger quantities of mixed materials.

  2. Do you work in an area where noise needs to be kept to a minimum? Then you should ensure that the mulcher has a sound-insulated hopper – or you could go for a quiet roller shredder.

BLADE SHREDDER OR ROLLER SHREDDER

With a high-powered STIHL blade shredder, you can effortlessly create valuable mulch from woody and soft plant waste. In this type of shredder, sharp blades rotate quickly to cut plant trimmings into small pieces.

The cutting rollers inside a roller shredder first shred and then crush branches and green waste. The result is organic matter that degrades quickly, as the rollers break up the fibres, making the composting process extremely easy for the responsible micro-organisms. This method produces very little noise, and so this type of shredder is also referred to as a quiet shredder. You can identify our roller shredders by an ‘L’ in the product designation.
